Is social media easier if you’re a writer?

I’m listening to Joyce Carol Oates on Masterclass and she is GOOD. I’ve always loved her writing; her short stories are the best I’ve ever read, but she teaches so well too…

The words quoted above struck me while I was listening this morning.

I love telling stories, I always have. In poetry, short stories, songs, blogs, my non-fiction books. But also in social media captions.

Someone recently said that she felt I put out so much content and wondered what was holding her back from doing the same. I said I wasn’t sure. And then I heard this and thought…

Maybe it’s that:

1. I love telling stories.
2. Because I’m a writer; it’s what I do every single day. So I can quickly type up a caption and press ‘publish’ without too much fuss.

I know that the other reasons I’m able to share content are because I’m not a perfectionist; my IG Stories often have typos but I don’t let it stop me. I don’t worry too much about making mistakes or ‘failing’. I fail all the time. I get it wrong all the time. I misjudge my audience or post at the wrong time. But instead of deleting a post with too few likes or no engagement, I just look at what went wrong and do it differently next time.

I’d love to know how you feel about sharing content – writing Instagram posts, blog posts etc. Do you find it hard, if you’re not a ‘writer’? Or because you’re a perfectionist? And if you find it easy, why do you think that is?
