The Online Business: Sarah Markham, Calm In A Box

“I find walking is the best way for me to switch off.” says Sarah Markham. She talks about what her typical day looks like, living a calmer life and teaching courses online…

Sarah Markham, the founder of Calm In A Box, lives in the Derbyshire countryside with her young daughter. After a difficult time in her personal life and suffering from poor health, she began a mission to live a more peaceful life.

What time do you wake up in the morning?
I have a four-year-old so ideally, 6.45 am but invariably 6 am and on the odd occasion 5.30 am.

What’s the first thing you do?
10 minute meditation – it’s the best time for me to fit it in.

When’s breakfast?
I have breakfast around 8.15 am with my little girl before we head off for school.

What time do you start work?
I start work from 7 am and do some social media between 7 and 7.30. I then can’t work until I’m back from the school run around 9.10 am.

Where do you work from (home, studio, office etc)?
I work from home currently on my dining room table.

Tell us about the work you do, including the online side of it…
My mission is to help people and organisations live calmer, happier and healthier lives to find work/life brilliance. I offer one to one and group coaching, workshops, webinars and retreats, online courses and I have a calm shop.

Do you break for lunch – and if yes, what’s on the menu?
Yes, I do around noon, and I usually have a ham and cheese sandwich.

How do you lift yourself from the afternoon slump?
I don’t get an afternoon slump as I’m off to do the school run again at 2.45 pm.

Do you incorporate exercise into your workday?
I try and go for a walk each day and/or do a yoga stretch.

Where do you go for inspiration?
Podcasts – I could listen all day.

What tech could you not live without?
My phone 🙁

What time do you finish for the day?
I try and squeeze in another hour after my little girl’s homework and before I make the tea – if I’m really behind, I work after her bedtime but I’m not good in the evenings so I try and avoid this. I end up catching up at the weekend if I have to.

Are the evenings for rest, work or play?

What are you reading/watching at the moment? How do you switch off from work nowadays?
I’m reading Option B by Sheryl Sandberg and Adam Grant and watching Schitts Creek. I find walking is the best way for me to switch off.

Screens in the bedroom, or banned?
Yes – for now…

How do you sleep?
Usually well, unless I’m very stressed and anxious.

Finish this sentence: This time next year, I’ll be….
still hopeful.
