“It was when I working as a sock designer (yes, this is a real job) – and I got to literally draw all day every day, which I just loved – that I designed my first little range of greeting cards, as a hobby. That opened the door to where I am now…” Meet designer and entrepreneur Sam Palmer…
Sam Palmer is founder of Lubelu London: a card, stationery and personalised products brand with a love of brush lettering and illustration.
How did you decide to start working in this field?
I’ve studied art and design my whole life. From drawing every day as a child to GCSE Art. A-Levels in art, graphics and English. Art and design foundation year. Then deciding whether to study graphic design or textile design at university. I chose graphic design, and studied for a degree at Central St Martins. It had been a longterm dream to go there.
I’ve now worked in the design industry for the last 15 years across a variety of design disciplines. From corporate at Hiscox to digital designer at Paperchase, beauty brands to socks and my last role studio manager at a menswear brand.
It was when I working as a sock designer (yes, this is a real job) – and I got to literally draw all day every day, which I just loved – that I designed my first little range of greeting cards, as a hobby. That opened the door to where I am now.
I had to resign from my last role due to not enough flexibility around my childcare so I took the leap and started Lubelu London.
Describe an average working week…
Well this has obviously completely changed because of what is happening in the world at the moment. If I’m honest I’m still trying to find my way with the home, child and work juggle. To find a routine somewhere. I was really overwhelmed and felt ‘everyone’ was achieving so much and I just couldn’t find any time. I’ve now realised that I can’t aim too high and I’ve started, as of today, to set three achievable tasks for my business for the day. I’m hoping the little bit each day will eventually add up and I’ll be more productive and achieve those bigger goals.
How do you spend your weekends?
I have a three and a half year old daughter who is my whole world so weekends are always with her. She does a ballet class and we often go for breakfast after. We hang out in the park, go for nice walks. She loves art so we’ve often got the paints out. My weekends are very much home days with friends and family. I’ll never switch off completely from Lubelu. If I get a moment I’ll be on the computer designing something or processing orders.
In a dream world: one year from now, where would you be and what would you be doing?
I’d like and hope to be happy and healthy if that’s not too corny to write. From a business point of view, Lubelu London is new this year. It’s the early days so a year from now I would love to still be here as a business after all this sadness in the world and to have built the brand up and for people to love it as much as I do. I’d like to have launched my online brush lettering workshops and my subscription boxes. To also have a bigger space to run my business from.
