What is a sales funnel? And do I need one?

If you want to find new people to connect with on Facebook and Instagram and sell your services to them, you will need a sales funnel.

If you’ve been posting endlessly on social media in the hope of selling your services, but it’s not working, it can be very frustrating.

Your posts are probably great: really helpful to the people who follow you. But for the amount of time you’re putting in, you might be thinking ‘this isn’t worth it’.

If it’s not working, something’s got to change.

Whilst we do make sales when we post on social media, we are beginning to rely more and more on sales funnels.

What is a sales funnel?

One of the main objectives of a sales funnel is to find the people who don’t know you, but who are likely to be interested in what you’re selling.

You introduce yourself, then you offer them something for free – something that genuinely helps them with something and demonstrates your expertise.

By doing this, you shift the relationship from people not knowing you at all, to people who have been helped or educated by you.

This relationship shift means that when you offer them your paid-for service, they’re much more likely to buy it.

Funnels come in many different shapes and sizes but I’ll quickly describe a very successful but simple funnel we used recently to sell one of our online courses.

Step 1: An advert for a ‘free video workshop’ on social media, shown to people most likely to be interested in the online course we were selling.

Step 2: An email registration landing page. People who click through from the advert provide their email if they want to see the ‘free video workshop’.

Step 3: A landing page with the ‘free video workshop’ on it. The video provides helpful information to the people watching it.

Step 4: People can then click through to a sales landing page where they learn how fantastic the online course is.

Step 5: Follow up emails and social media adverts to anyone who didn’t purchase the course.

Yes, you do have to pay for the social media ads, but if you’ve created a good funnel, you’ll benefit in two ways:

  1. You make sales in a much more controlled way.
  2. You build your email list – a valuable asset to any business.

If you’re a coach, a trainer, or perhaps you have an online course you want to sell… you’re missing a trick if you don’t have a funnel running.
